What Kindness Is

What is kindness?  After doing a brief word study this is what I learned kindness is:

Intentional
Nourishment
Devotion
Noble
Encouragement
Service
Selfless

Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved,
clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness,
humility, gentleness and patience.
Col 3:12 niv

I thought I was a kind person and to some extent I am
but I have a lot of work to do to be truly kind.

Yield, part 2

My word for 2017 is yield. In Yield, part 1 I wrote about yielding as in surrendering or submitting. Today I will write about another definition of yield:

to produce or provide something as a result of time, effort, or work;
receive benefits, profit, or interest;
to reap or harvest

When we work for an employer we get paid for our labor and often we receive added benefits like insurance, retirement benefits, paid holidays or sick days, and vacations. To get the benefits we must work and satisfy our employer. We are required to surrender our time and wants and do our best to serve the person or company we work for if we don’t we lose the rewards.

The Lord expects us to work:

For six days, work is to be done,
but the seventh day shall be your holy day,
a day of sabbath rest to the LORD.
Ex 35:2a niv

May the favor of the Lord our God rest on us;
establish the work of our hands for us–
yes, establish the work of our hands.
Ps 90:17 niv

When we invest our money we do so hoping to profit from the investment. Putting money into a savings account gives us interest on the money we put into the account.

The Lord wants us to work without complaint or stubbornness. He wants us to have good attitudes about what we do and who we work for. He has benefits for us. We will profit and be rewarded. When we do as the Lord tells us we will receive the benefits He has promised us for our faithfulness and perseverance,  surrender and submission.

Work willingly at whatever you do,
as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people.
Remember that the Lord will give you an inheritance as your reward,
and that the Master you are serving is Christ.
Col 3:23-24 nlt

So let’s not get tired of doing what is good.
At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing
if we don’t give up.
Gal 6:9 nlt

girl-1064659_640So, the word yield has rewards that come with it. Of course, I have to work and yield, surrender and submit to God before the rewards are realized. And that’s a struggle for me. This is going to be an interesting year. One that is going to see a lot of talks with Jesus that will have me debating, complaining, arguing, and sometimes in tears. I know He can take it but not too sure about me.

Be Kind, Tenderhearted, Forgiving

The other day I was asked to help someone.  The person doing the asking is not a close friend, more of an acquaintance, and the person needing help I know only slightly. I was asked to help because I have some experience with the problem at hand. I don’t think of myself as one who holds grudges but the first thought I had was, why come to me, when have you helped me? And I don’t even know the person you want me to help! The minute after that thought was in my head this came to mind,

Put up with each other, and forgive each other if anyone has a complaint.
Forgive as the Lord forgave you.
Col 3:13  (gwt)

That stopped me from saying the ugly words.  It was awful of me to think those words but saying them would have been worse than awful. Jesus heard my thoughts and knows my heart and He stepped in to keep me from causing someone pain…again. Thank you, Jesus!

Later on, I was getting comfortable for a chat with Jesus and this was brought to mind,

But when you are praying, first forgive anyone you are holding a grudge against,
so that your Father in heaven will forgive your sins, too.
Mark 11:25 (nlt)

You see I was holding a grudge against this acquaintance of mine.  I had forgotten all about the day I asked her for help and she said she couldn’t help. Or I should say I thought I had hard-694733_640forgotten. Obviously, I held that day in my heart and let it fester until I was reminded of it and then let the ugliness come forward. I hadn’t forgiven her this little thing. I know better than this. I want to be like my Lord.

Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another,
as God in Christ forgave you.
Eph 4:32 (esv)

What have I learned from this?

  • I can be resentful and unforgiving
  • I am not examining my heart as I must
  • My prayers are more self-centered than I thought
  • Jesus wants us to be better than we are and helps us get there

The Word has been given to us to teach us what we need to know to be like Christ.
All we have to do is let it into our hearts and use it as needed.
Everyday.

Colossians 3:23-24 niv

It doesn’t matter what we do or who signs the paycheck,
the bottom line is we work for the Lord.

Do you work harder when remembering who you are serving?
Does it make work more rewarding?

All the understanding, we need is in Christ.
With knowledge, there is salvation which leads to wisdom.
The treasures are hidden but, they are found in Christ.

Have you found the way to God’s hidden treasures?
