Come and Talk

Prayer is many things but it is not a monologue. Sometimes there are many gathered together to pray but there is never less than two involved in any prayer. Whenever there is prayer happening there is always at least two, the person praying and God. The wondrous thing is that God wants to talk with us.

My heart has heard you say, “Come and talk with me.”
And my heart responds, “LORD, I am coming.”
Ps 27:8 nlt

grey-crowned-crane-540657_640Yes, Jesus says “Come and talk with me.” He wants to have a conversation. What is a conversation?  It is the interchange of thoughts, ideas, and information between persons. In a conversation, one person talks and the other listens then the one listening responds to what was said. It’s a give and take, a sharing. When we pray we talk to Jesus, He listens.

LORD, You have heard the desire of the humble;
You will strengthen their hearts. You will listen carefully,
Ps 10:17 hcs

Then it is our turn to listen. There are times when Jesus seems to shout, we hear Him loud and clear. Though I have found that most often He speaks quietly and we have to listen closely. And there are those times when He is silent. Those occasions can be frustrating and can make us feel He has just walked away. But He never walks away.

I waited patiently for the LORD,
and He turned to me and heard my cry for help.
Ps 40:1 hcs

The Lord always hears us and always responds but we sometimes have to wait for His response. This is not what I want when I pray. I don’t like waiting I want answers now! And that often leads to more talking…on my part. He listens and answers in His perfect timing. Waiting patiently for Jesus to speak tends to be difficult for me but I have learned that waiting prepares us for the gift He has been waiting to give us. He waits to reveal His gift until we are ready to receive it.

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him,
who have been called according to his purpose.

When You Hear His Voice

There are times when I don’t know where I am going or what I am doing. Times when I feel I don’t have a thing to offer. Times when I feel like I cannot take another step. This can happen when I am not taking care of my body; not eating right, not getting any exercise, not enough sleep or too much sleep. I know what to do to change these things and with some discipline get things back to where they need to be. It’s not easy but I can do it all by myself.

However, there is another reason for my loss of focus and my weariness. When I make “me” the center of my world. When “me” becomes the only one I listen to. When “me” is most important and nudges Jesus to second place “me” gets lost in simple everyday life. I know what I need to do to get back on track and with discipline, I can do it. It’s not easy and I cannot to it all by myself.  I need direction, refreshment, and restoration. I don’t need to go far to find it.

The LORD will guide you continually, giving you water when you are dry and restoring your strength. You will be like a well-watered garden, like an ever-flowing spring.
Isa 58:11

When I rely only on myself there is confusion and disquiet within me, when this happens on the inside anger and melancholy show on the outside. Not pretty and definitely not reflecting the image of Jesus to others.

I need to be reminded who is in control.
But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace.
Ro 8:6b

I need to be reminded of the promise that Jesus does speak to us.
That is why the Holy Spirit says, “Today when you hear his voice,
Heb 3:7a
All we have to do is listen.

Hebrews 2:1 niv

birds-216827_640It takes no effort to drift.
We just relax and stop paying attention, b
efore you know it
we are in a place with no idea how we got there.

We can drift off on our own, be softly jostled, or be roughly pushed.
Whatever the cause what is most important is that we know the way home.

What makes your attention waver?
If you begin to drift how do you get back home?

The servant says “Listen and pay attention”.
He not asking that if we have time for Him to please sit and chat.
He is saying to stop what we are doing and hear what He has to say.
From before He was born He was known and named by God.
This is no ordinary servant.

When was the last time you listened and were attentive to what Jesus said to you?

listen

Everyone wants to be heard.
Yet, here we are told that we are to hear before we are heard.

Misunderstandings and anger happen when we do not listen.
Our egos want to be the center of attention.
It takes patience to listen.

Are you “quick to hear” or do you only want to be heard ?
